Stones and beliefs!

John and I go back a long way. We were school mates and are still very good friends today. As we grew up over these years, much of us have changed but some parts remain the same. The parts of us that did not change were the parts we BELIEVED needed no changing because it gave us meaning. We remained faithful to our inherited faiths, cultural practices, family values, etc. This meaning came from inside us because many others that we knew no longer believe in these same values or principles.

Now one thing about John that did not change was his belief in stones. Yes, you heard that right. He believed in the power of gem stones that gave him health, peace and prosperity. Of course, I never BELIEVED in stones or gem stones for that matter. So we took a bet. He challenged me to wear one of his stones for a week and experience the income earning opportunities it would bring. He told me that it would work, regardless if I believed in it or not. Ok, no harm, I’ll give it a try. Who would not like new incoming generating opportunities!

So the week started and the week ended. When he saw me again, he had his “I told you so” look on his face. Looking like a proud peacock, he asked, “Now do you believe?” “Hmmmmmm hell no!” was my cheeky answer. Nothing happened! “Really? Are you sure? Are you kidding me? You must be joking, right?” These were some of the skeptical statements that he thrown me. I felt like we were school kids again, having one of those teenager arguments about what is true and what is BS!

Well the truth was, nothing happened! Nothing has power except when you give it power! Most things outside us have very little ability to influence or change us. That power comes from within, the power of meaning. When we have meaning, deep meaning, we have belief and a belief can influence and change us. It leads to the performance of the meaning, its REAL – LIZATION.

Notice the liberating news of this truth. First this power is from within, not outside and hence we are in control of. Secondly, because of this, we can either keep it or remove it totally. What this means is that we can choose to disbelief something or to begin to believe in something new. We can choose beliefs that empower us, serve us and help us actualize. Or we can choose beliefs that rob us of power, enslaves us and lead us to addictions and self destructive behavior…..all the while believing that what controls us is on the outside! This inevitably leads to blame, our refusal to accept accountability for our behaviors or performance and superstitious thinking patterns.

So getting back to the gem stone, did it really work? No, because I did not believe in it. I never gave it power. Stones and beliefs…..well, beliefs always win! Because when we believe, we will have the powers to produce the right mindset, skills and strategies to succeed and realize our beliefs!
