33 + 69 = the Power of Meaning

They called themselves “Los 33”; they were buried “alive” on August the 5, 2010, beneath 700,000 tons of rock, mud and earth. With just 48 hours of food and water supply, 622 meters below civilization and in complete darkness, these men remained alive and hopeful for 17 days without the slightest hit of any rescue efforts from above.

69 days later and with much heroic efforts from thousands coupled with the moral support of millions world wide, the “Los 33” became the “Found 33”!

What is intriguing, for me, is what were the beliefs that ran through their hearts and minds during these first 17 days? What were their beliefs about the “possible outcome” of their current situation, being fully aware of the grim statics of mine tragedies and rescue attempts of the past? These, after all, were professional miners who knew the risks that were inherent in their industry!

Whatever these beliefs were, they awakened in them the motivation, drive, discipline and teamwork to stretch 48 hours of food and water supply for 408 hours! (17 days)

That itself was a miracle, the “17 day miracle of Los 33”! If they had given up a week, a couple of days or even a few hours before, the rescuers may have stumbled upon the “Dead 33”! What produced this miracle?

It was the power of MEANING!

It was the meanings that they had, both individually and as a group, about the situation that they were in, about themselves, their families, lovers and colleagues above ground and their faith in God that produced the miracle.

What is the POWER of meaning?

It is simply this, when ever something means something to us, we think of it as being REAL! We say YES to it! We embody it in our autonomic nervous system. That’s its power.  Anything that is REAL shapes our everyday realities, our internal experiences, our expectations, how we define ourselves, our resources, skills, abilities, emotions, etc.!

Most of us live our lives unaware of this power, its power to either transform our lives into a miracle or a living hell. Human beings are meaning making machines! We are constantly seeking to make meaning and once we have made meaning, we are moved to perform them!

For example, if a child is repeatedly told by its parents that crying is a sign of weakness and immaturity, he may grow up into adulthood with this frame of meaning around crying.  Hence if ever he is at the point of crying, he will resist it or avoid it all together. When someone else cries, he will associate “weakness” and “immaturity” to that person. That person who cries is weak and immature. This is real for him, regardless of whether or not what he believes is true or false!

Thus, we first have the meaning, the validating as real of the thought making it a belief: Crying is a sigh of weakness and immaturity.

Then we have the “performance” of that meaning, of that “reality”: The habit of not crying as well as seeing and labeling others who cry as weak and immature!

Performance always follows meaning.

“Meanings are highly influential nuclear reactors in our lives!”

If we form toxic meanings, we will perform toxic behaviors, habits and actions. If we form solid, robust and live enhancing meanings, we will perform solid, robust and life enhancing meanings through our behaviors, habits and actions.

All of us have the power to make our own meanings and perform them. At any given time we have this power to choose our meanings, pull apart toxic ones as well as form new and resourceful ones!

What are some of the meanings that you are consciously and unconsciously performing?

What are you meanings about your work, spouse, children, siblings, parents, your childhood, the future, money, the world, others, your business, etc.? These meanings are running your lives. The sooner you are aware of them, take charge of them and create more resourceful ones, the sooner will you begin to live your fullest potential and perhaps, even realize the impossible!

The numbers “33 + 69” can become for us a strong symbol for the power of meaning in our lives, the power of positive meanings!

33 miners choose the right meanings for 17 days and survived below 700,000 tones of rock. Above, thousands were performing similar meaning and kept up the search. In 69 days, the “miracle of Chile” was born. The impossible was performed for the world to see regardless of the dire statics of the experts and past historical evidence of failures. What was its driving force? Meaning, the right kind of meaning!
