“The lesson of Sasha Fierce.”

“I just can’t do it! Every time I get up front to give my presentation I get nervous, forget at least 15% of my content, and feel a lack of confidence and nervous. Even though my presentation goes well, it simply fails to impress. It lacks that extra “something.” “How’s well do you prepare yourself for your presentations?” I asked him. “I follow your “Communicating with Mastery” methodology and practices. I prepare and rehearse my presentation, my cues and props…..and keep practicing like crazy, yet; I seem to be missing that little “difference that makes the difference” when I’m in front presenting.

Ok, I said. I think it is time for me to introduce you to Sasha Fierce. “What? Who?!” was his reply. “You mean you have not heard of or met Sasha Fierce? She’s just what you need to access “the difference that makes the difference” I said. “Ok…..introduce me…….”

I got up and played Beyonce’ live performance of her hit “Crazy in Love”. He sat there mesmerized by her performance, her voice, her dance moves, her charisma, her on stage presence and energy that blew the audience away.  “Wow, that’s really the difference that makes the difference!” he said. “You, bet. That’s exactly what you need.”

“Who do you think just performed?” I asked him. “Beyonce,” he answered. “No.” “No? Hey that was Beyonce, just go ask anybody.” “Well it was Beyonce but the person performing on stage was Sasha Fierce, her on stage alter ego. You see, Beyonce has an alter ego whenever she performs on stage, a “juiced up” performance state. That for her is “the difference that makes the difference”. It’s a state of “performance excellence” that she steps into.”

When Beyonce broke away from Destiny Child, she faced a degree of stage fright. In a way, she was now the lone performer on stage. Being a shy person by nature and this situation brought her a measure of stage fright, especially the idea of performing in front of thousands screaming fans. Live! Have no doubt; Beyonce had the talent, the skills, the voice, the complete package. She knew her “game”, practiced, worked hard, was detailed and simply loved what she did. In fact she loved singing, performing and always wanted to be a star. Nonetheless, she faced this issue which had the potential of making her performance seem just “normal.”

Her solution was the creation of Sasha Fierce. Sasha Fierce became her on stage alter ego, the performance juggernaut version of Beyonce that separated her from her shy persona. Sasha was FIERCE, she was fearless, courageous, free, energetic, unconcerned about the opinions of others, spontaneous, fun, sensual, resourceful and engaging. Sasha Fierce brought out the “3 D” dimension of Beyonce’s performance and became the “difference that made the difference”!  The rest, as they say, is history.

“I have someone else that takes over when it’s time for me to work and when I’m on stage, this alter ego that I’ve created that kind of protects me and who I really am. Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I’m working and when I’m on the stage.”

In NLP and Neuro Semantic we call this developing your state of excellence. A “state” is a combination of our thoughts – how we are representing something, be it ourselves, the situation we are in or others, our emotions- they re the feelings that these thoughts generate in us and our physiology which generates a particular form of behavior from these. All three are one and mutually influences the other as mind and body are part of the same system and influences each other in a circular way.”

“Excellence” is that quality of that “makes the difference” in whatever field one is engaged in; the qualities of being passionate, committed, resourceful, engaging, free, focused, spontaneous, fearless, wise, energetic, confident, uninhibited and totally absorbed in the task at hand. That quality where time disappears and you are in “the flow.”

The opposite of the state of excellence is the state of fear, of self doubt, lacking confidence, of being internally shouted at by our inner critique, feeling uncertain, disengaged, anxious and self conscious. The main factor here is fear, perhaps the fear of looking silly and of our own greatness! No matter how much you prepare, practice, are skilled, talented and feel passionate about a particular field, your lack of developing a state of excellence when your perform will affect your performance. Fear and uncertainty will limit your possibilities!

“We fear our highest possibilities. We are generally afraid to become that which we can glimpse in our most perfect moments, under the most perfect conditions, under conditions of greatest courage. We enjoy and even thrill to the godlike possibilities we see in ourselves in such peak moments. And yet we simultaneously shiver with weakness, awe and fear before these very same possibilities.”

- Abraham Maslow

Beyonce created Sasha Fierce! Top class athletes do the same whenever they are about to compete. They get into their own tailor made state of excellence, the world disappears and they are all there, highly focused, confident, engaged, congruent, fearless and not intimidated by their competitors or the surroundings; it’s the “difference that makes the difference” – your state of excellence!

“Talent is that which is in a man’s power; genius is that in whose power a man is.”

-James Russell Lowell, Literary Essays

So what about you? Would you like to develop a state of excellence to step into to give the “difference that makes the difference?” Would you like a “Sasha Fierce”, an alter ego, in your field of expertise, in your passionate endeavors to raise your game and generate ever expanding peak performances? If your answer is yes, follow these steps below, to develop your own state of excellence, your own “Altered Ego State of Excellence”.

Just to let you know, this stuff works. Research has shown that your subconscious cannot tell the difference between real practice and imagined practice, hence what you create; your excellent “altered ego” state will produce its results in your entire neurophysiology! It is based on the NLP/Neuro Semantic presupposition, “Since memory and imagination use the same neurological circuits as external sensory awareness, they can powerfully influence our development.” So are you ready? Here we go, the steps to developing your ALTERED EGO STATE OF EXCELLENCE!

Step ONE: Identify an excellent state that you want.

What state would allow you to summon your capabilities and give you the confidence to perform a skill at your best, courageously?

(It would help if you identified the context. Is it for public speaking? Making an impactful sales pitch? It could be for a competitive sport or any other high performance needs that require that “state of excellence”)

Step TWO: Imagine a circle in front of you, large enough so that you can step into it.  Now imagine the state you require filling up this circle.

You can imagine a time when you were excellent at what you were doing, where everything went smoothly, you were energetic, confident, happy, fearless, creative, congruent, successful, engaging and balanced. If you don’t have a personal history or memory to access, you can just pretend and create it, remember, your subconscious cannot tell the difference.

Imagine this “alter ego state” filling this circle. It could be a “Sasha Fierce”, a movie super hero, a living celebrity, legend or anyone you admire and want to model to get you into that state of excellence. Emotionally capture that feeling of excellence, visualize it. Again, remember your brain cannot tell the difference between a real history and an imagined one. So go ahead and have fun doing this! Be empowered!

Step THREE: Imagine this circle filled with this resourceful state getting brighter and brighter. Give it a color, feeling, sound, texture and smell you like. Creatively represent it to yourself using all your sense to actually FEEL what it’s like to be in this state of your “altered ego of excellence”.

See yourself being energetic and confident….fully visualizing your posture, balance and confidence, hearing what you will be saying and feeling the torrents of pride , greatness, resourcefulness and calmness filling all around and inside you.

Step FOUR: As you stand outside the circle, use your imagination to increase the qualities of your “alter ego of excellence” represented there. Amplify all that you have imagined. What is it like to have all of these qualities at 1000%? What would you be seeing? What would you be hearing and feeling? Keep amplifying, amplifying, and amplifying until you reach “boiling point”! Does it feel good, powerful and amazing? Do you like it?

When you have added enough detail and resources and fully recreated the experience, step into this “alter ego of excellence” you have created within the circle and notice how you feel, look and sound like! Bath yourself with this experience!

Anchor it by giving it a name, a figure or posture and aura. It could be “Sasha Fierce”, “Super Nova”, “Joe Juggernaut”, etc. This would enable you to reassess this state anytime you need it in the future.

Step FIVE: Now step out of the circle.  Look at that “alter ego state” you have created and named. Now step back into it and experience it again. Consider what it looks and feels like to own these qualities of excellence.

When would you need to be performing from this state in the future? Where would you be, in what circumstances and with whom? Absorb fully this state, the name you have given it and notice how quickly you will be able to allow yourself to totally recall and step into this state in the future whenever you need it.

Step SIX: Step out of the circle. Now you have your own “Sasha Fierce” weapon of excellence. Do you like it? Will you keep it? Own it!

There you go six simple steps you can take to create your own “Altered Ego State of Excellence.”

Remember, this NLP/Neuro Semantic pattern does not actually create competence in a skill you desire. It assumes commitment, practice and competency is already in place. (One needs to be aware of the important difference between confidence and competence!)

When ability is not enough and a dose of confidence is required, especially in stressful conditions, just before you walk up on stage to perform or make a critical sales presentation, this exercise works miracles. Keep practicing the steps above until accessing your “altered ego self” becomes effortless!  It can be used for any situation that your desire to generate excellence; public speaking, sales presentations or closings, marketing, business development, sports, etc.

Back to my client who I was coaching: well, he did meet “Sasha Fierce”, learned the lesson and created his own “altered ago state of excellence.” It helped him access “the difference that makes the difference” and is today rocking his world! What about you? Are you ready to rock your world?

As a treat, allow me to leave you with the clip of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” live performance by “Sasha Fierce”. It is one of my favorites and has helped me create my own “altered ego state of excellence.” Enjoy and may it inspire you to create your own state of excellence too!
